Thanksgiving Preparation, Expat Style: Of all the skills I’ve acquired over the years, it’s cooking that I think is the most warming, useful, and instantly (or sometimes not so instantly) satisfying. Perhaps not surprisingly, Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. It’s quintessentially American, earthy and bodenständig, festive, warming and autumnal, and just…perfection.
One way to make it as perfect as possible is homemade cranberry sauce and garlic buttermilk mashed potatoes.
Headed to a friend’s for a belated expatriate Thanksgiving in a couple hours, and I simply cannot wait. I’ve already prepared the cranberry sauce, using a slightly tweaked version of Ina Garten’s cranberry fruit conserve recipe, and the mashed potatoes are ready and cooled - so I just have to transport them and warm them up when I arrive at my friend’s.
Happy Thanksgiving !
